What is 'Dry Eye Disease?'

Causes of Dry Eye
More than 16 million Americans experience dry eyes. Dry eye disease or dry eye syndrome can be a chronic problem for some. It is a result of your tears not providing enough natural lubrication in your eyes.
Dry eye occurs when your eyes don't produce enough lubrication tears. Another cause can be poor quality of tears. Both of these can be affected by medication, your hydration levels and environmental influences (allergies, pollen, dust)
While the condition is more common with certain people over 50, anyone can experience the symptoms. Although dryness would be a more obvious symptom, you can also have excess watering (watery eyes) or a foreign body sensation (feels like something is in your eye.)
